The third month of the year doesn’t just usher in the refreshing spring season, but it is also full of celebrations! From St. Patrick’s Day to International Waffle Day, there is plenty of fun taking place. However, as you enjoy yourself with your friends and family, it’s important to keep your oral health in mind. These special days can take a toll on your pearly whites! Here are a few special holidays in March and how to protect your smile as you celebrate.
March 1st: Peanut Butter Lover’s Day
Thanks to George Washington Carver, peanut butter has become a staple in the American diet. This creamy treat is enjoyed in so many ways, such as in a sandwich or smeared on an apple or celery. However, certain varieties can contain high levels of sugar. This can lead to an increase in cavities. Additionally, it is very sticky, causing it to remain on your teeth for long periods of time. If you decide to celebrate Peanut Butter Lover’s Day, choose the natural variety with low sugar. Also, be sure to brush your teeth afterward to wash away any remaining peanut butter goodness!
March 14th: National Pi Day
This holiday is funnily celebrated on March 14—or 3/14. 3-1-4 are the first three significant numbers in pi. What better time to eat an actual pie? Unfortunately, as commonly known, these treats are filled with refined sugar, as well as acidic fruits. These can wreak havoc on your smile by increasing the chances of tooth decay. If you do celebrate National Pi Day, be sure to limit your pieces of pie and drink plenty of water afterward to wash away leftover food particles and bacteria.
March 17th: St. Patrick’s Day
The luck of the Irish has arrived! Along with the parades and festivities, there are plenty of green foods. No matter where you turn, you see emerald-colored cookies, deviled eggs, and beer! While these treats may be fun to enjoy, the green food coloring can put a dark stain on your smile. If you eat and drink only small amounts, your teeth should return to their normal appearance. If not, you can always go visit your dentist for a routine cleaning or professional teeth whitening treatment.
March 25th: International Waffle Day
This is a day to celebrate the wonderful chewy goodness that originated from Belgium: waffles! But there is one downfall to this honeycomb-patterned bread—it usually is enjoyed with tons of maple syrup. As you well know, sugar can lead to tooth decay. The good news is that now there are low-sugar syrups on the market. Also, you can always put the sticky liquid on the side and dip your waffles into small amounts of bit.
You can still enjoy all the festivities of March while also minimizing the risks to your smile. With a bit of mindfulness, your teeth can remain healthy and bright all spring.
