Invisalign is an incredible orthodontic treatment, capable of straightening your teeth discreetly and without any change in diet. However, like with any treatment, there are some things about it that’ll take some time to get used to.
For example, some people who start Invisalign treatment find that they have a hard time speaking with their aligners in. If you want to know a little more about that, here’s a guide that can tell you everything about how Invisalign can affect your speech.
How Can Invisalign Affect How I Speak?
When people first get their aligners, they aren’t quite used to the way that they make their mouth feel. Their teeth aren’t coming together in the way that they’d expect, and they might not be able to move their tongue forward to the extent that they could before.
These problems can sometimes give patients who’ve just started wearing their aligners a little bit of a lisp, where “th” and “sh” sounds become a little bit difficult to form.
Sometimes, your aligners can also cause you to salivate. Excessive saliva production can make it a little bit difficult to speak properly, or just embarrassing to do so. Again, this will probably fade with time, so be patient.
How do I Speak with Invisalign
Invisalign can give some people a speech impediment because they aren’t used to it. Speaking is all muscle memory, so it can take a little bit of time to retrain yourself to talk in a new way. If your aligners have given you a lisp, all you need is practice.
So long as you wear your trays often, you’ll retrain yourself to speak with them eventually. However, if you’re frustrated by the lisp, deliberate practice can speed up your adaptation to wearing aligners. Record yourself speaking with your trays in and deliberately try and break the lisp. Speak slowly, and take your time.
After a few weeks of wearing your aligners, you’ll be talking like a pro. All it takes is a little bit of practice, and you’ll be able to clear the first hurdle on the road to your perfect smile!
